A replacement ejection seat for the cockpit of a model of the MiG-15 fighter in 1:32 scale. It is not an aircraft kit but a detail accessory: it replaces the simplified seat from the kit with a more accurate rendition.
On a model in a large scale the cockpit is the first thing a viewer examines, and the seat is the most conspicuous piece in it. An injection-molded seat from a kit inevitably has simplified shapes, missing harness straps and soft definition, because otherwise it could not be molded. The replacement part solves that problem, and with the canopy open the difference is apparent at once.
An early ejection seat was a fairly new thing in the days of the MiG-15. It worked on a pyrotechnic charge, which flung the pilot out of the cockpit together with the seat, and the pilot then had to separate from the seat himself. It was a solution that gave a chance of escape only within a certain range of speeds and altitudes, but in its day it meant a fundamental step forward over the earlier way of leaving an aircraft over the side.
Wash the part first in lukewarm water with a little dish soap and let it dry. Cut the remains of production off with a fresh blade and level the area; protect your airways while sanding. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Paint the seat away from the model, because once it is set into the cockpit you cannot reach it with a brush. Set the harness straps apart from the structure in both color and shade and add the metal buckles, which give the cockpit a sense of scale.
