Eight red tones for painting figures, from a dark wine shade through crimson to a fiery transition into orange. Intended for cloaks, heraldry, uniform facings and for shading and highlighting red surfaces.

The selection is built around a single color, but spreads it from a deep wine tone right up to a bright fiery transition into orange. It is precisely this continuous series that is the hardest thing about red: on its own it covers only weakly and without a prepared shadow and highlight it looks flat on a figure.
The set is made up of a dark chalice tone, crimson, a sharply saturated red, a calmer tone toward violet, a cool magenta, a glowing red, a faded shade variant and finally flame orange. The customer thereby gets a ready-made ladder in which every step has a logical neighbor and the intermediate steps do not have to be mixed by hand.
It finds use on cloaks and hoods, on banners and coats of arms, on uniform facings and also on the leather of helmets and strapping. The faded tone serves well on historical figures, where the fabric is meant to look worn, while the more saturated steps suit fantasy subjects, where strong contrast is expected.
It proves best to start with the darkest tone as a base, to apply the lighter steps thinned in thin layers and to let them dry through in between. On edges and folds a dry brush helps, while in recesses the darkest tone thinned down works instead. Keep the fiery step to small areas only, otherwise it will overpower the rest of the figure.
To make full use of the ladder, a primer in neutral gray that gives the red covering power comes in handy, and a matte varnish at the end. For clean transitions reach for a brush with long bristles and thin the paint with water rather than with a preparation that speeds up drying.
