Sixteen shades for figures from the War of Independence of the United States. The blue of the Continental regiments, the red of the British ranks, and flesh and equipment too.

The War of Independence ran from 1775 to 1783 and in terms of color it is among the most striking conflicts of all. British infantry took the field in scarlet coats with colored facings that differed from regiment to regiment, Hessian mercenaries added dark blue and white, American units began in whatever anyone had at home and only gradually unified their appearance into a dark blue coat with buff breeches. One scene thus takes more colors than the whole of the following century.
According to the name the package counts sixteen pieces. The selection follows the need to paint a whole figure: the uniform blue and red, buff and white tones for breeches and belts, browns for leather and the wood of a stock, metal colors for fittings and a bayonet, and flesh shades with them. The binder is acrylic and it thins with water; once dry it stays matte.
Scarlet covers weakly and goes gray over a dark ground. It pays to lay a lighter tone or a pink intermediate coat under it and only then to build the saturation up. White features, by contrast, should never be painted in pure white across the whole area, as it would look like paper. Add a drop of ocher to it and leave the white only on the edges and raised spots. Facings and trim are the main distinguishing mark of a regiment in this period, so check the subject before you reach for the thinnest brush.
A scene from this conflict takes place on country roads and among wooden fences, so it is worth keeping some of the brown and buff paint for the groundwork as well. A matched base sets a figure into its setting and draws attention away from the spot where the casting meets the surface.
