A fine Tamiya engraving needle for restoring panel lines that have disappeared during the sanding of joints and filling.
Responsibility details are not available.
A molded groove on a part is shallow, and a few strokes of sandpaper across a glued seam will reliably erase it. An engraving needle brings it back: the tip is guided along the edge of a ruler or a flexible template and it takes material out instead of only pushing it aside. The resulting groove therefore stays sharp, and after spraying a wash settles in it exactly where it should.
You scribe by pulling toward yourself, not by pushing away. Make the first pass almost without force, only so that a trace appears in which the tip will hold itself. Only the second and third strokes deepen the groove. Anyone who wants to gain depth with one vigorous movement will slip off the path and scratch the surrounding surface, which is considerably harder to repair than a shallow line.
Besides restoring panels it suits marking the parting gap of doors and hatches, opening a blind hole, preparing a row of rivets and roughening a surface before gluing. It takes soft polystyrene readily, while harder materials call for more passes. Once you are done, run fine sandpaper along the line, because a pushed-up burr stays at its sides, and clean the part thoroughly before painting, so that dust does not settle in the groove.
Besides the needle the manufacturer offers scribing blades graded in width from one tenth of a millimeter upwards, so alongside the fine tip you can also get a tool for wider, deep grooves. The fine tip remains the most versatile choice, though, because it also reaches places a wider blade cannot get to.
