About product

Vallejo Model Color Flat Yellow RLM04 (70.953), the Luftwaffe yellow, 17 ml

A matte yellow from the Model Color range of Vallejo. This is a model paint, not a kit, and the package contains one dropper bottle with a volume of 17 ml. Model Color is a water-thinnable acrylic, matte and heavily pigmented, intended primarily for brush application; for an airbrush it has to be thinned. The paints that go into an airbrush without thinning form a separate range, Model Air, so do not confuse the two.

What RLM 04 means

This is not just any yellow. RLM 04 Gelb is a shade from the regulation palette of the German Reich Air Ministry, and in practice in the Second World War it served as the yellow of the tactical and quick identification markings of the Luftwaffe. It appeared on the tips of engine cowlings, the undersides of noses, bands around the fuselage, the tips and undersurfaces of wings, rudders and propeller spinners, as well as on tactical numbers and letters. You will know these elements most strikingly from the Eastern Front and from the Mediterranean, where they were to tell the machines apart from the enemy at first glance. The assignment of the shade to RLM 04 is stated by the manufacturer itself, so reach for this yellow when you build a German aircraft and want the markings correct for the period.

Use

  • The tips of engine cowlings and the undersides of the noses of German fighters and bombers
  • Identification bands around the fuselage, the tips and undersurfaces of wings
  • Rudders, propeller spinners, tactical numbers and letters
  • In general a matte yellow where the tone should be muted rather than garish
  • Thinned with water; for an airbrush thin it to the consistency of milk

Application, it will not work without a light base

Yellow has weak covering power and shows through on dark camouflage (typically over gray-green upper surfaces). The proven method: first cover the area with white or light gray, let it dry and only then build the yellow up in thin coats. Mask only once it is perfectly dry, because fresh acrylic likes to come away with the tape.

Who the paint is for

For aircraft modelers who build Luftwaffe machines and want the right yellow for the identification elements, and for collectors of period shades who work with a brush.

A water-thinnable acrylic. Ensure ventilation when spraying and protect your airways. Keep out of the reach of children. Close the bottle properly after work.

FAQ

It was the yellow of the quick tactical and identification markings of the Luftwaffe: the tips of engine cowlings, the undersides of noses, bands around the fuselage, the tips and undersurfaces of wings, rudders, propeller spinners and tactical numbers. You will meet it most often on machines deployed on the Eastern Front and in the Mediterranean.

Yellow covers badly. First cover the area with white or light gray, let it dry and only then apply the yellow in two or three thin coats. Straight over a dark surface the shade is lost and turns greenish.

Flat Yellow RLM04 is a particular period shade tied to the Luftwaffe and it is matte. Deep Yellow (70.915) is a universal saturated yellow with no tie to a period standard; it suits warning elements, vehicles and mixing, not historically accurate Luftwaffe markings.

Yes, after thinning with water or a thinner for acrylics. Model Color is a thicker paint developed for the brush. If you spray a lot and do not want to thin, look for the same shade in the Model Air range.
