Marker pens for goblin mobs: a poisonous yellow, a sharp green, orange, black and a light leather for gear.

A goblin differs from its larger relative in more than height. Where an orc relies on strength, a goblin bets on numbers, poison and speed, and its coloring is meant to give that away from a distance. A mob on the gaming table tends to be varied to the point of garishness, because an individual figure is small and has to be recognizable from a meter away. Hence the poisonous yellows and the luminous greens, which on a large figure would look tawdry.
Vivid Green forms the basis of the skin. Bile Yellow serves as a poisonous accent on eyes, teeth, potions and hoods. Orange brings cloth, a flame or a mob marking to life. Light Leather covers straps, boots and the rough leather parts of the gear. Black closes the outline, which is crucial on small castings, because without a firm line the shapes run together on the playing surface.
With numerous units it pays off to paint by color, not by figure. First go through the whole group with the skin, then with the gear, and finally with the accessories. A marker suits that better than a brush, because nothing has to be topped up or washed between pieces. On a complex casting it helps to draw the tip lightly over the raised surface, otherwise the paint piles into a groove and that groove then stays conspicuously dark.
Different figures are tied together by a shared element, for example the same color of hood or of mob marking. A single shade repeated on every piece is enough, and a collection of individuals suddenly becomes a military whole that holds together even on a full playing surface.
