HGQ04 is the red paint from the set prepared for the GQuuuuuuX series. The shades of this set are mixed so that they go together on the finished model, which is particularly useful with red: a red mixed by hand is hard to repeat, and when it runs out in the middle of a build the second batch never matches exactly.
It is an acrylic paint thinnable with water from the Gunze range. It dries to a semi-gloss sheen, that is, to a surface between flat and gloss. A red in a semi-gloss finish stays saturated, yet it does not throw back so much light that a photograph burns the whole area out into a single shape with no detail.
Stir the paint thoroughly before use. A light base does a great deal for the saturation of the red; over bare dark plastic it looks muddier and takes more coats. Lay down two or three thin coats with a pause to dry, as a single heavy coat floods the engraved detail and goes lighter on the edges. Wash and degrease the parts beforehand. For an airbrush thin the paint as the manufacturer directs and match the ratio to the pressure and to the size of the nozzle.
The paint is supplied on its own. The kit, the thinner, the primer, the clear coat and the tools are not part of it, unless stated otherwise.
