The eight items of the HMS range are not a palette for machinery or for aircraft. They came about for the 30 Minutes Sisters figure kits, and three of them, A, B and C, follow the three body tones in which those figures are molded. HMS-02 is the middle one.
The 30MS kits are sold alongside accessory parts: spare bodies, hairstyles and face parts, each separately. Anyone assembling a figure from several boxes almost always ends up in a situation where one part is off in tone. The middle shade is the most common target for unifying at such a moment: repainting the odd part to it is easier than pulling the whole figure toward one of the outer tones. It pays to work from the least conspicuous part toward the most visible one, so that any deviation in tone does not show up straight away on the face.
Most of all for modelers who treat 30MS not as one box but as a construction system, and who buy accessory parts for it. For a single figure assembled exactly to the instructions the paint is unnecessary, as the plastic already has that tone from the factory.
