A flesh tone from the acrylic Hobby Color line. A base layer for shading faces and hands on model figures.

Painting figures stands or falls on how the skin looks. This shade is built exactly for that job: it gives an even, mid-tone flesh area over which shading, highlighting and lip color are then built. It is not meant to be the finished result on its own, since real skin is never a single flat color anywhere.
First, the whole face and hands are covered with an even coat. Once dry, a muted wash goes into the recesses — the eye sockets, corners of the mouth, under the chin and between the fingers. Then the raised areas — the bridge of the nose, cheekbones, chin and knuckles — are highlighted with the same tone plus a pinch of white or light yellow. Finally, a trace of red is mixed into the cheeks and ears, so the figure does not look like a wax mannequin. For unshaven men, the lower part of the face can be given a barely noticeable blue-gray undertone.
The shade also handles surfaces unrelated to skin. Thinned, it serves as a base for light canvas, as a faded rope color, or as an undercoat beneath wood on a rifle stock.
The binder is water-thinnable, so plain water or thinner from the same brand will do. On small parts, work with a well-drawn-out brush and paint thinned to the consistency of milk; a thick coat will fill in the molded facial detail and the figure will lose its expression. It pays to mix a larger batch at once, since matching the exact same skin shade again later is nearly impossible.
