This product has nothing in common with liquid paint. Inside is colored powder pressed into a lead that wears down like a crayon. The core has a triangular cross-section, so an edge draws a thin line and the flat side softly colors a larger area. The shade is a fresh pink, that is the tone used on figures for a blush on the cheeks, a fine shadow under the edge of a garment or a touch on the lips.
It is worked without water and without thinner. The powder is laid on with a light stroke and blended immediately afterward – with a finger, a cotton swab or a dry soft brush, according to how sharp the transition is to be. The strength is built up gradually: the first stroke gives only a hint, and only the third layer creates a more saturated spot. That is exactly the greatest advantage over paint, because nothing is mixed and the shade can be strengthened at any time.
The powder holds on a matte surface that has microscopic roughness. On gloss varnish or on smooth plastic it will not cling and comes off at the first touch. The figure is therefore given a coat of matte clear varnish before the work, which creates the bond needed.
Until you seal the work, the application can be wiped off with a dry cloth and started again. Fixing with matte varnish usually subdues the shade slightly, so it pays to lay on a little more than would seem right at first glance. The difference is seen best in the light of a display case, where a subdued pink touch loses part of its softness and the transitions read as harder.
