For small parts, the modeling bench is the most dangerous place in the house. A trimmed aerial, a landing gear wheel or a photo-etched part will slide off a smooth top before you can reach for it, and ends up in the carpet. A nonslip surface stops that movement right at the start: the part stays where you put it and does not shift either during sanding or when you nudge the top with your elbow.
For anyone who builds in a limited space and has at least once looked for a part on all fours on the floor. It is especially useful when working with photo-etch and resin accessories, where a single part tends to be irreplaceable and no spare can be found. It serves just as well when taking apart and repairing a model that is already built, when more small items are laid out on the top at once and there is a risk of sweeping them away with a sleeve.
Wipe the sanding dust off the surface when you finish work, otherwise it will lose its grip over time.
