The third generation of this varnish came about as an answer to two long-standing modeling problems. The first is the yellowing of a clear layer after long exposure to light, the second is a soft film that smears under polishing. The formula contains a component that absorbs ultraviolet radiation and it dries to a harder and more durable surface than older clear varnishes.

The eighteen-milliliter bottle is noticeably larger than a normal bottle of colored shades, which makes sense when varnishing a whole fuselage or car body. The solvent is shared by the whole lacquer family, so different systems do not get mixed and there is no risk of clouding.

The best results come on a fully cured color coat. Start with a mist pass that creates a key, and only with the second and third coats flood the surface to full gloss. Once dry, the surface can be sanded with very fine paper and finished with polishing compound, which is useful above all on car models.

The layer also works as protection for the decals and as a base for the washes that follow. Because this is a lacquer system, the acrylic paint underneath stays untouched only when it is completely cured and the first pass is really light.

A note on the order of work pays off. The final flat or semi-gloss coat goes on only after the washes have dried, otherwise the solvent gets underneath them and smears them. Anyone varnishing canopies and glazing will appreciate that the layer does not cloud clear plastic and that the frame edges stay sharp. A single light pass is enough on small areas; a heavy coat would pull into droplets in the corners of the glazing and stay visible in them after drying.
