N040 Flat Base

Gunze Acrysion Flat Base — matting additive (10 ml)

Note, this is not a paint: it is a matting base from the Acrysion acrylic range by Gunze. It is added to a gloss paint or a clear varnish and changes their surface from gloss to flat. The more of the base you add, the flatter the result — from a gentle satin through semi-matte to a full flat. You therefore mix the exact degree of sheen yourself, which ready-made flat paints do not offer this precisely.

How it works

Flat Base holds a matting component with no shade of its own. When you mix it with a gloss paint, the shade stays but the surface loses its sheen. It is also used on its own as a flat protective coat over a finished paint job. The key is in the dosing — the ratio governs the final look.

Use

• Add it in small doses to a gloss paint or varnish and stir thoroughly.
• Tune a satin, a semi-matte or a full flat by dosing it gradually.
• Use it on its own as well, as a flat protective coat over a finished model.
• Dose it carefully — too much of the base gives a powdery, even chalky and more brittle surface.

The chemistry and thinning — important

Acrysion is a water-thinnable acrylic with its own thinner. It is thinned exclusively with the original Acrysion thinner, or with clean water. It does not take the thinner of the Aqueous range nor a lacquer thinner — those would curdle the additive. Do not mix or thin Acrysion with other ranges of paint.
