A model is small compared with the real machine, so light does not work on it in the same way: a large single-color surface looks flat and lifeless. Color modulation solves this shortcoming by bringing one shade to life in several tones. The lighter tones belong on the upper surfaces and in the centers of large panels, where the light would fall, the darker ones in the lower areas and where a shadow would lie. The set is put together for exactly this procedure, so there is no mixing of shades and no guessing how far the lightening can go.
Olive drab is a muted olive green carried by American ground vehicles from the Second World War and for decades afterward. The set therefore suits tanks, armored personnel carriers, trucks and also the small equipment, crates and jerrycans of the same period. It also comes into its own on figures, where it is enough to suggest the difference between the tones in the folds of the gear.
Stir the container thoroughly before work, as the pigment settles at the bottom. Work from the darkest tone to the lightest, apply thin coats and let the transitions blend, so that no sharp edges remain between the tones on the model. Apply the light tones with restraint; the model should look lit up, not striped. Choose the thinner and the thinning ratio according to the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging, and use the thinner intended for this range.
The paint set is supplied in the packaging listed in the manufacturer's catalog. Thinner, brushes, spraying equipment and a model are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
