A polystyrene sheet 0.5 mm thick. A basic building material for bulkheads, floors, interior fittings and for making missing parts.
Responsibility details are not available.
Polystyrene is to a modeler what a board is to a joiner. The half-millimeter thickness is one of the most versatile: it is stiff enough to make a standing bulkhead or the floor of a cab, and at the same time it can be cut through with a single pass of a knife, without a saw and without a file.
The material is the same as the one kits are made of, so it is joined with an ordinary thin plastic cement. The joint dissolves and, once dry, holds as firmly as the material itself: it is not a gluing of two foreign substances but a welding of one.
The best method is not to cut through. Score a groove several times with a knife run against a metal ruler and then snap the sheet; the break comes out straight and the edge does not wave. The burr left by the break is leveled with one pass over sandpaper laid on a firm base.
It can also be shaped with heat. A strip warmed over a light bulb or in hot water bends into a curve and keeps the shape once it cools, which suits rounded covers and fuselage transitions.
From the sheet you can also make what no kit contains: a replacement hatch, a filler for a badly fitting gap, a shim under a resin casting or a template for cutting repeated parts. A diorama builder who needs a flat floor for a ruin or a board for improvised shuttering will reach for it just as readily.
Keep the sheet flat and weighted down so that it stays true; a piece that has been bent once is hard to straighten and then springs while it is being glued. Before applying paint it is enough to wipe the surface with spirit and remove the grease from your fingers; the material needs no other preparation.
