A finished collector's model of the American Lockheed SR-71A strategic reconnaissance aircraft in 1:72 scale from Century Wings. It shows a particular machine of the 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing nicknamed Ichi Ban, operating from the Japanese base at Kadena in 1968. The model is cast in metal with additional plastic parts, painted and marked, so it is neither built nor glued. In 1:72 scale it is a large piece, because the real aircraft was over thirty meters long.
The SR-71 was built to fly above twenty kilometers at over three times the speed of sound. Its titanium alloy structure allowed for the airframe expanding with heat in flight, so on the ground the machine leaked fuel slightly and was topped up only after takeoff. The conical engine intakes had movable centerbody spikes that changed position with speed. From Kadena in Japan it flew over the northern Pacific and over Asia.
The metal casting is heavier than a plastic model, so stand it on a firm surface and on a shelf that will carry the weight. Wipe the surface with a soft dry cloth; cleaning agents can damage the printed markings. Do not display the model in direct sunlight, as a black surface warms up in the light and the colors fade. Handle the moving parts carefully.
It is a finished painted model, not a kit. No glue or paints are needed.
