An injection-molded plastic kit of the German ship Admiral Scheer as she was in 1940, in 1:700 scale from Flyhawk. This variant is the DELUXE: according to the manufacturer it adds a wooden deck, masking templates and a 3D-printed set of anti-aircraft weapons to the basic kit, that is exactly the extras a modeler would otherwise have to hunt down separately. Flyhawk is a brand known for exceptionally fine ship kits in 1:700, and the Deluxe editions are among its flagship boxes.
Mind the scale: 1:700 is a small ship scale; the finished model is markedly smaller than the same class of ship in 1:350, and for the Admiral Scheer the length works out at roughly 27 cm. Do not expect a giant. On the other hand 1:700 is the most widespread ship scale: the models fit easily into a display case and collect well in series.
The Admiral Scheer was a Panzerschiff, a so-called pocket battleship. Her design was an answer to the limits of the Treaty of Versailles: nominally she was to stay under 10000 tons, while in reality she was heavier. The result was a type of ship with very clear logic: strong enough to destroy anything that could catch her, and fast enough to escape anything that could destroy her. She carried six 283 mm guns in two triple turrets and, thanks to her diesel propulsion, had enormous range. That made her an ideal commerce raider. On a cruise from the autumn of 1940 to April 1941 she crossed the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean, covered over 46000 nautical miles and sank 17 merchant ships of over 113000 GRT in total, which made her the most successful German major raider of the war. Her end came in April 1945 in an air raid on Kiel.
In 1:700 everything is tiny. The main work lies in the superstructure, the armament, the railings and the rigging; you need tweezers, a sharp scalpel and a steady hand. Lay the wooden deck only onto a finished, painted and dry surface and press it into the corners carefully so that it does not tear. The 3D-printed anti-aircraft weapons are finer than plastic; cut them off with a margin and bond them with super glue. Leave rigging from elastic thread right until the end.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
