An injection-molded plastic kit of the American destroyer in 1:350 scale from I Love Kit, a brand connected with the Trumpeter production circle that has focused in recent years on American destroyers among other things. In ships, 1:350 is the established standard: the model is big enough for honest detail and still fits sensibly into a display case. Worked out from the dimensions of the real ship, the finished model comes to about 33 cm long.
USS Fletcher (DD-445) is not just another destroyer — she is the lead ship of the whole class, the ship the class is named after. She entered service in 1942 and went straight into the hardest fighting: she took part in the naval battle of Guadalcanal. The Fletcher class is the most numerous class of destroyers in history, with 175 ships built. They were the universal workhorses of the Pacific: carrier escort, antisubmarine work, anti-aircraft defense, shore bombardment. The armament consisted of five 127 mm guns in single mounts and ten torpedo tubes in two quintuple mounts; the speed exceeded 35 knots. It was precisely that combination of speed, range and versatility that made the Fletchers the backbone of the American escort forces.
The main work is on the superstructure, the armament, the railings and the rigging — even in 1:350 there are many parts and they are small. The classic approach works best: build and paint the subassemblies first and join them only afterwards. Primer, an airbrush for the hull and the decks, and thin cement for plastic in small doses so that it does not flow into the engraved detail. Railings and ladders are the typical place on a ship model where a separate photo-etched set is added, and it lifts the final impression a great deal. Add the masts and antennas with fine wire and leave the drawn-thread rigging for the very end.
Do you want the same class considerably larger? The USS Stevens (DD-479) has also been produced in 1:200 scale by Trumpeter — a model roughly 57 cm long, almost twice the size, with correspondingly more detail, and in the rare version with a catapult. This 1:350 box, by contrast, takes up far less space.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
