A set of five replacement blades for a modeling knife. The edge has the shape of a hook, that is, a curved cutting edge that cuts when pulled toward you. That sets it apart from every straight blade: a hook does not push the material down but lifts it and cuts it away. For the modeler it is a tool for specific jobs rather than an all-round blade, and in those jobs it has no substitute.

What it is suited to

A hook blade proves itself when deepening and restoring engraved panel lines, because it runs along the line and does not jump out of it. It also works when removing rivets, when cutting foil on a mat, where a straight blade cuts into the surface underneath, and when cutting material on the pull where there is no room to guide it against a ruler. The curved edge also keeps its bite better on soft materials that would give way under a straight blade. For ordinary separation of parts from the sprue gate an angled or chisel blade is more suitable, because a hook bites into a flat surface and leaves an uneven edge.

Use

• Cut by pulling toward you, not by pushing away.
• When scribing a line, make several light strokes rather than one deep one.
• Change the blade as soon as it stops biting; a dull hook tears the surface.
• Put used blades into a closed container.
