About product

Focke-Wulf Fw 190 D-9 1:48 - a New Ware masking set of the MARKING type

Unlike ordinary masking sets, which deal with the canopy glazing, masks of the MARKING type are intended for spraying the markings and insignia directly in paint. The modeler applies them to a finished painted surface, sprays over them and, once they are removed, a sharply bounded marking is left with no decal carrier film. The set is an accessory to the plastic Fw 190 D-9 kit in 1:48 scale, which it does not contain, and it is cut for the MiniArt 48040 kit.

The real subject

The Fw 190 D-9 was a late version of the German fighter of the Second World War in which the designers replaced the radial engine with a liquid-cooled Junkers Jumo 213 V engine. The change called for a lengthened nose with an annular radiator and a longer tail, hence the long-nose nickname. The machine entered service at the end of the war and is one of the most frequently built modeling subjects of that period.

How to use the masks

Spraying the insignia has one great advantage over decals: there is no glossy film on the surface that would have to be polished out once dry. The procedure: the surface under the mask must be smooth and perfectly cured, otherwise the mask will pull the paint off when it is removed. Lay the mask along a reference line that you mark out beforehand with a pencil or thin tape, because once it is stuck down you will not move it. Apply the paint very thinly and in two passes; a heavy coat will create pronounced ridges at the edges of the insignia. Spray multicolored markings in layers according to the enclosed diagram and let the paint become tacky between layers. Take the mask off shortly after it has dried and check the edges against the light.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building German fighters of the Second World War in 1:48 scale
  • those who want to spray the markings instead of applying decals
  • builders of heavily weathered models, where the sheen of a decal would be a problem
  • more experienced modelers used to positioning a mask accurately

The set is an accessory to a plastic kit, which it does not contain. Paints, glue and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

These are masks intended for spraying the markings and insignia directly in paint, that is, as a replacement for decals. The exact extent is given on the packaging of the set.

That differs between sets of this type, so check the contents on the packaging. The manufacturer normally offers masks for the glazing in separate sets.

A sprayed marking has no glossy carrier film, does not curl over engraved lines and stands up better to subsequent weathering.

It takes a little practice. The mask has to be positioned accurately first time and the paint applied very thinly, so that no ridge forms at the edge.
