1/48 Fw 190 D-9 Mimetall Production mask (for Miniart)

What the set contains

Masking stencils in 1:48 scale for the Fw 190 D-9 model in the production form of the Mimetall works. The stencils are prepared to measure for the kit from MiniArt, so they fit the shapes of its particular parts and the lengthy cutting and trying out of your own masks falls away.

How to use the masks

A stencil is applied before spraying, never onto a finished coat. The surface has to be clean, dry and degreased; on greasy plastic the mask will not hold and paint will creep under the edge. Transfer the stencil with tweezers or the tip of a knife, seat it dry and then press the whole perimeter down carefully, above all where the surface breaks or curves. Lay the paint on in several thin coats and direct it straight down from above rather than at an angle against the edge, so that it does not get under the mask. Lift the stencil off while the paint is freshly dry and has not yet cured: raise the edge with the tip of a knife and draw it away slowly back over itself, not straight up, or you will tear the finish.

The real subject

The Fw 190 D-9, known by the nickname Dora, is a late version of the Fw 190 fighter with a lengthened nose and the liquid-cooled inverted V12 Jumo 213. The radiator is annular and sits ahead of the engine, so from a distance the aircraft resembles the earlier versions with a radial engine. Airframes of the D-9 version were built at several works and Mimetall was one of them; machines from the individual plants differed in details of their execution, and that is exactly why it pays to know where your subject comes from.
