Complete masking set for the Bf 109 G-6, 1:48 scale

This is a masking set, not a model. The manufacturer lists it as the complete variant, which brings two things together. The first is shaped cut masks for the canopy glazing, thanks to which the frame has a sharp edge without cutting tape by hand. The second is foam plugs for the wheel bays: flexible fillers that are pressed into the bay, adapt to its shape and keep paint out. They are not glued, so they leave no residue, and they can be used again. On the Bf 109 this is particularly useful, because the bays in the wing are shallow and wide and are awkward to cover by hand.

The real subject

The Bf 109 G-6 was the most widely built version of the German fighter of the Second World War. It was powered by a liquid-cooled inverted V12, that is an engine with the cylinders below the crankshaft. The G-6 version is recognized by the prominent fairings over the barrels of the fuselage guns, which crews nicknamed after their bulging shape.

Usage tips

• Wash the glazing first in lukewarm water with detergent and let it dry.
• Move the mask with tweezers or a damp wooden stick, not with a finger.
• Press the plug into the bay so that it is flush with the surrounding surface.
• Spray at a right angle and in thin coats; spraying at an angle gets under the edge of the mask.
• Take the masks off while the paint is fresh, and remove the plugs at the very end.
