A complete masking set for the La-5, 1:72 scale

This is a masking set, not a model. The manufacturer lists it as the complete variant, which brings two things together. The first are shaped cut masks for the cockpit glazing, thanks to which the frame has a sharp edge without cutting tape by hand. The second are foam plugs for the landing gear bays: flexible fillers that are simply pressed into the bay, conform to its shape and prevent paint from getting inside while spraying. They are not stuck on, so they leave no residue, and they can be used again. On the bays this is a fundamental saving of work, because they are hard to cover by hand and the paint gets in anyway.

The real subject

The Lavochkin La-5 was a Soviet single-seat fighter of the Second World War. It came about by converting an older type with a liquid-cooled engine to an air-cooled two-row fourteen-cylinder radial, which helped the machine markedly. The structure remained mixed, with a large proportion of wood.

Usage tips

• First wash the glazing in lukewarm water with detergent and let it dry off.
• Transfer the mask with tweezers or a damp wooden stick, not with your finger.
• Press the plug into the bay so that it lies flush with the surrounding surface, because one standing proud would leave an edge.
• Spray perpendicular and in thin coats, because an angled coat will run under the edge of the mask.
• Take the masks off while the paint is still fresh, and remove the plugs at the very end.
