About product

The European railway and its range of colors

During the twentieth century the continental railways settled on a surprisingly narrow palette. The smokeboxes and boilers of steam engines were covered by black, the bodies of diesel locomotives wore dark green or signal red, frames and bogies were given a red-brown protective finish and freight cars aged into earth tones. It is for exactly that scenery that the whole offering is put together.

The extent of the shades

The assortment counts fifteen covering tones and one varnish. Besides white, black and a medium sea gray for roofs, there are two rusts here, one smooth and one with a metallic sheen, then an aluminum metal for stakes and steps, a sand yellow, a muddy brown and a red-brown for running gear, a golden yellow for lettering and a bright blue for newer vehicles. A flesh tone will be appreciated by anyone who puts a driver in the cab.

Working with the set

Thinning with water and low pressure in an airbrush will keep the coat so thin that it floods neither rivets nor pressings in the sheet metal. The shades suit a brush as well, only it is best to let them air for a while and thicken. The final satin varnish evens the gloss out between sprayed areas and small things painted in by hand and at the same time seals the surface before dry weathering with pigments.

Who it is for

It aims at railway modelers in the usual sizes as well as at builders of dioramas where a train makes the backdrop. The same tones will serve for track trolleys, draisines or industrial siding equipment in an industrial scene.

A freight car or a tank car looks best when the paint is laid on in two densities: a covering lower part and over it a translucent coat through which the original tone comes through. The earth shades in the package are enough for that, and nothing has to be mixed.

FAQ

Sixteen pieces in all, of which fifteen are covering shades and one a satin varnish for evening the surface out at the end.

Yes, it is a line made ready for spraying. It is thinned with water and takes low pressure, so it does not flood the fine relief of sheet metal.

Yes. The rusts, the earth tones and the red-brown work just as well on industrial equipment, cranes or siding trolleys in a diorama.

Because of the crew. A driver in the cab is a frequent detail in railway scenes and the set allows for him.
