A red fluorescent shade from the Precision Fluor range by AK Interactive. It comes into its own on the tail and brake lights of vehicles, on the port navigation light of an aircraft, on warning beacons and on instrument panel indicators. In a diorama it can suggest glowing cracks in lava or smoldering embers, and on sci-fi hardware energy weapons and light strips in the hull.
Fluorescent pigment returns the incoming light at a different wavelength, so in daylight it looks neon and under an ultraviolet lamp it stands out most. It does not glow by itself in the dark; this is not a phosphorescent paint. Red fluorescent pigments are among the weaker ones in opacity, so the base shows through a thin coat and the shade shifts toward brown.
Undercoat the area in white and apply the shade over it in two or three thin coats with a pause for drying. One heavy coat floods the detail and dries unevenly. On red-hot metal work from the lightest center outwards into red and blur the transitions with a dry brush. On a bulb or a headlight it pays to lay down a silver or white base in the reflector first and only then the color coat. For thinning and for cleaning your tools follow the manufacturer's instructions.
For modelers of vehicles and aircraft who want their lights legible even in a small scale, and for builders of figures and sci-fi hardware. The shade is sold on its own; the model, thinner and varnish are not included, unless stated otherwise.
