About product

A ruined site has a palette of its own

A wrecked house looks different from a standing one. The plaster falls away and exposes masonry of another color, concrete shatters into a light fracture, charred wood is all that is left of the roof frame, and everything is covered by a fine mortar dust that levels the shades into one muted tone. It is precisely this unifying cast that separates a convincing ruin from a heap of randomly colored pieces.

Box contents

Eight containers cover the whole building as well as what is left of it. Dark soil and packed earth go on the floor and the surrounding terrain, medium stone and a sand tone on blocks and stairs, beige on old plaster, a wood brown on beams and door frames, a concrete shade on panels and lintels, and the scorched earth tone serves as the link between everything else.

Procedure on rubble

The best result comes from building up from the bottom. First the whole area including the small fragments gets a base, then the individual pieces are toned so that they differ, and finally a dry brush in a lighter tone goes over the edges to bring out the fracture of the material. The dusty cast is made with a heavily thinned beige applied from above, so that it settles into the hollows and the horizontal surfaces.

Where it can be used

The package is aimed at dioramas with damaged buildings, but it serves just as well on a stone wall, paving, the abutment of a bridge or a rock base under a vehicle.

One more thing deserves a mention. Rubble is almost always lighter than a modeler imagines, because the fracture of stone and crushed mortar reflect a lot of light. A dark whole therefore tends to bury a ruin rather than give it drama, and depth is better created with shadow in the hollows and under overhangs of masonry.

FAQ

It does not. It is purely paints; the material of the debris and the fragments has to be obtained separately.

With a heavily thinned beige tone applied from above. It settles in the joints and on horizontal surfaces exactly the way real dust settles.

Yes. The paints hold well on an absorbent surface; it is just worth firming the surface up first with a thin base coat.

Yes, the two soils and the sand are in the package precisely so that the ruin and the surrounding ground look like one whole.
