An eight-piece Vallejo set for dark characters - six opaque shades and two shading washes.
Responsibility details are not available.
Silent assassins, night scouts and hooded swordsmen are among the hardest subjects in all figure painting. The whole figure is dark and there is a risk that it will merge into one shapeless mass. The set solves that problem by offering, alongside charcoal and brown, a cool gray and a metal tone that separate cloth, leather and blade from one another. The complement is a blood red, the one rich accent that holds the scheme together.
The division is not accidental. The opaque tones cover the surfaces, while the two liquid washes - brown and black - draw themselves into the recesses and with a single stroke of the brush draw in the folds of a cloak or the joints of fingers. A beginner will appreciate exactly those: without them every shadow would have to be mixed, and a mixed shadow rarely comes out right the first time.
The sequence that works is simple: a base in the middle tone, then a wash into all the recesses, and once that has dried a pass with a dry brush in a lighter tone over the raised edges, and right at the end the small metal detail. Do not rush that last step: metal applied before the wash underneath has dried will dissolve into it and has to be done again.
The colors are acrylic, thinned with water and flat once dry, so they take a final protective varnish. Besides fantasy subjects they also work on historical figures in dark clothing, on modern soldiers in night equipment and on the leather parts of saddles and harness in larger scales. Figures and brushes are not included.
