About product

Machines from invented wars

Fighters from films and games have one feature in common that modelers often underrate: they look worn. They are not polished toys but worked-out working machines with scuffed edges, oversprayed panels and a difference between a part made originally and one that was replaced after some unpleasant incident. A dirty white hull with a few saturated color markings is the hallmark of the whole genre.

What is inside

The eight tones are put together for exactly this look. The basis is a white gray and a light gray, and a gray blue tone and a wolf gray belong with them for panels that differ from the rest of the skin. The yellow and the red serve markings, stripes and warning areas. Steel metal and black finish off the nozzles, the armament covers and the technical cut-outs where the inside is visible through the skin.

How to work with it

The key to a convincing result lies in unevenness. The hull is not sprayed in one tone; first the base is laid down and then randomly chosen panels are gone over with a slightly different shade. The difference should be barely perceptible, because skin like that is exactly what looks as though it were assembled from parts of different ages. The color markings go on last and it is worth making them sharp and saturated so that they stand out against the muted surroundings.

Where to use it

The palette suits collector's models and kit-built models of space machines as well as figure games, where a similar look comes into its own too.

The last recommendation concerns the edges. Scuffed metal on the leading surfaces and around the hatches is best done with a dry brush and the steel tone, but it has to be dosed sparingly. A few places look believable, while a whole outline traced over will give away that it was an effect and not the mark of real service.

FAQ

Because of the unevenness of the skin. Alternating two close tones on individual panels is the quickest route to a worn look.

Yes. Muted grays with a few saturated markings work on gaming models just as well as on collector's pieces.

On smooth resin and printed parts it is recommended. On ordinary plastic the paint holds even without it, as long as the part is degreased.

It does not, these are covering shades exclusively. A matte or gloss varnish has to be obtained separately.
