Styrene strip 1.50 x 1.50 x 350 mm — a package of 10 pieces

Ten pieces of polystyrene profile with a square 1.50 x 1.50 mm section and a length of 350 mm. This is not a kit but material. The dimensions in the name are millimeters, not a scale. Against the thinnest profiles this size is noticeably stiffer, so it carries its own weight even over a longer span — and that is exactly why it suits places where something has to stand and hold its shape.

What it is suited to

• Load-bearing elements of dioramas — beams, posts, frames of shelters and fences
• Frames and edges of crates, pallets and simple scenery equipment
• An inner frame onto which thinner sheet or strip cladding is then glued
• Sturdier bracing of large models, where a thin profile is not enough
• A source of material for shaping of your own by sanding and cutting

From strip to structure

When building structures it pays to work to a template. Draw the plan on paper, tape it to the work surface and lay the individual pieces out on it — you will get right angles without measuring each piece separately. For repeated cuts of the same length, make a stop out of an offcut; it saves time and mistakes. Make the cuts square; at this thickness a slanted cut shows and the joint will not seat. If you need a wooden look, run coarse abrasive paper or the tip of a knife along the surface to raise an irregular grain — under paint, smooth plastic becomes surprisingly convincing wood. Prime before painting, otherwise acrylic will not hold on the smooth surface.
