The gold from this line is one of three metallic shades and works differently from matte paints. Its effect is made not only by pigment but by tiny flakes which, as it dries, line up parallel with the surface and reflect light in one direction. That is why an area looks a little different from every angle and why it is handled more carefully than an opaque tone.
A metallic shade hides nothing; quite the opposite. Every scratch from sanding, every fingerprint and every remnant of a parting line is emphasized under it, because the bright flakes follow the shape of the surface. The area is therefore smoothed and degreased better before it than under a matte paint. A dark base under gold deepens the tone into an antique look, a light one brightens it into a clear brass sheen instead. The coat should be thin and even; under a heavy application the flakes become mixed up and the metal loses its sheen.
A matte varnish over a finished gold coat reliably kills the effect, because it scatters exactly the reflections the shade is used for. Anyone who needs protection reaches for a gloss or semi-gloss covering, and even that only where it is necessary. Polishing or rubbing a dried area does not pay off; a metallic coat is more sensitive to wear than a matte one. Gold gives the best result on ornaments of armor, buckles, chains and weapons, that is where the area stays small and has dark surroundings next to it for contrast. On large areas it loses slightly, because an even sheen across a whole part reads more like foil than like metal.
