A gray marker for weathering

A modeling marker in a gray shade with a pen-type tip. A marker is the tool for the moments when an airbrush does not pay off: you carry the paint straight to the place where it belongs, without mixing, without masking and without waiting for the airbrush to dry out. It therefore suits small interventions and the fine-tuning of a finish that is otherwise already done.

Where gray comes in useful

Of the shades for weathering, gray is the mildest. It does not shout like black, which looks hard and unnatural on a light finish, and yet it is enough to set the engraved lines and the shadows under raised details apart from the surrounding area. It serves well on light finishes, where black tends to look like a drawing in ink, and just as well for suggesting wear, dust and fading on edges.

How to work with the marker

• Try the mark first on an offcut or on a place on the model that is not on view.
• On a smooth and perfectly dried surface the marker runs more surely than on fresh paint.
• Draw in two passes rather than in one heavy stroke; that way the tone can be graded.
• Cap the tip immediately after work, otherwise it dries out and the mark starts to skip.
• Whether the excess can be wiped off, and what to seal the mark with if need be, is given in the manufacturer's instructions.

What the delivery contains

The marker alone is supplied. Paints, clear coats and other aids are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise. The composition of the filling and the recommended procedure are given by the manufacturer on the packaging.
