Six acrylic tones for the sand finishes of US Army vehicles: earth and sand shades complemented by ivory and an aged white.
Responsibility details are not available.
The uniform sand color that most people today associate with American armor came in at the start of the 1990s. Before it, a broken scheme of several tones was used in the desert, but it then turned out that in open terrain a single light shade over the whole vehicle works better. The six paints in this set cover both and also add tones with which the finish can be shifted toward fading.
The shades in the package: a dark earth brown, a desert sand, an earth yellow, a light desert tone matching the modern uniform finish, an ivory and an aged white. The last two are not mixed into the base but laid over it, to create the impression of dust and sun bleaching.
Where it belongs: main battle tanks, wheeled armored vehicles, off-road vehicles, transport containers and aircraft standing on a desert apron. The same tones also appear on gear and crates, so the palette also suits the small items around a model.
A note on the work: light desert shades are treacherous in that once dry they look flatter than they should. It therefore pays to leave the panel lines and joints noticeably darker than seems appropriate while the paint is wet, otherwise the model loses all its definition once dry.
The last recommendation concerns the order. It is advisable to finish picking out the joints and shadows before the layer of dust goes on, because that softens the result. Anyone who does it the other way round usually ends up with two layers that cancel each other out.
