Six shades from the Red Line for the dark European camouflage of American aircraft of the late 1970s and the 1980s.
Responsibility details are not available.
At the end of the 1970s American aircraft operating over Europe received a dark camouflage made up of green and gray fields, commonly called European One or simply Lizard. It was meant to hide the aircraft over wooded country during a low-level attack, so it appeared on A-10 attack aircraft, on Hercules, Starlifter and Galaxy transports and on helicopters and strategic aircraft as well.
The six shades cover the whole scheme. Dark Green FS 34079 was worn by F-4 Phantoms and by the A-7D machines of the National Guard, European I Green FS 34092 and Medium Green FS 34102 form the green fields of both tactical and transport aviation. European I Grey FS 36081 and Gunship Grey FS 36118 cover the gray fields, the second of them also used in early versions of the scheme on the A-10 and the Phantoms. Green Drab FS 34086 belonged to the strategic B-1B and FB-111A.
The scheme changed over the years. Early versions were built on a combination of the green tones with Gunship Grey, later ones rather on the pair of greens complemented by European I Grey, and on transport machines the fields were laid out differently than on attack aircraft. It is therefore worth working from a photograph of the particular aircraft.
The dark green tones have strong covering power, so a thin coat is enough. Two light passes are better than one heavy one, otherwise the panel engraving fills up. On the real machines the transitions between the fields were sharply cut, so masking tape suits marking them out. Before decals are applied the finished surfaces are coated with gloss varnish.
The set includes six bottles from the Red Line. It does not contain a model or masking tape.
