Omask Waves 1/72 irregular — a universal masking wave

A universal masking aid from the Czech manufacturer Omask. It is masking tape with a machine-cut wave in the irregular version, that is with an irregular run of the wave. The manufacturer offers it in versions for various scales and in a regular and an irregular variant; this one is intended for 1:72 scale, and the size of the wave matches that. It is not tied to one particular type of aircraft: use it wherever you need a boundary between two colors with a wavy run.

Use

• Spray the first (usually lighter) shade and let it dry thoroughly.
• Stick the wave along the intended boundary, joining the pieces so that the wave runs on smoothly.
• Cover the rest of the area with ordinary tape or paper.
• Spray the second shade perpendicular to the edge and in thin coats, which limits bleeding underneath.
• Lift the mask off while the paint is not yet fully cured; the edge can be tidied up with a light overspray.

Who it is for

For modelers who spray multicolor camouflage with a wavy interface and do not want to cut the wave laboriously out of masking tape by hand. The irregular variant looks more natural than a repeating regular pattern, because the rhythm of the wave does not repeat and the eye does not catch a wallpaper effect. It suits aircraft models in 1:72 above all, but nothing stops you using it anywhere the size of the wave fits.
