Resin sandbags for the front of the M10 and M36 tank destroyers in 1:35 scale for the Tamiya kit. The improvised protection that crews added themselves.
Responsibility details are not available.
A resin set of improvised armor of sandbags for the American M10 and M36 tank destroyers in 1:35 scale from the maker DEF Model. This is not a vehicle kit but an accessory: the set adds to the front the mass that crews piled up themselves, and with that it turns a model into a machine from a particular front rather than from a factory hall. The manufacturer has designated the set for the Tamiya kit.
American tank destroyers had thin frontal armor as the price of their mobility, and the crews were very well aware of it. They looked for a solution with their own hands: they piled sandbags, lengths of track, spare road wheels or wooden beams onto the front. The real benefit of such protection was questionable and some commands forbade it because of the overload on the front axle, but photographs from the end of the war show how common it was.
Wash the parts in lukewarm water with dish soap and let them dry out. They are glued with super glue. Try them dry before gluing and fill any gaps with putty, so that the bags look piled up rather than stuck on. Start the painting with a sand shade, carry on with a dark wash into the gaps between the bags and finish with a light dry brush, which will bring out the texture of the fabric.
The set is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. The Tamiya kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
