Masking plugs for the wheel bays of a model of the Armstrong Whitworth Whitley Mk.V and Mk.VII bomber in 1:72 scale, cut for the Airfix kit. Pliable shaped inserts that fill the recesses in the engine nacelles before spraying.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is not a kit or a photo-etched accessory, but an aid for painting. Wheel bays are deep recesses that paint gets into during spraying even when the outside is otherwise masked. Plugging them with crumpled cotton wool is slow and the result is rarely even. These plugs have the shape of the particular bay, slide inside and fill it exactly up to the edge, so the edge stays crisp. The set is cut for the Airfix kit; on a model from another manufacturer the bay has a different shape.
Push the plug into the bay so that it is flush with the surrounding surface, and do not press it in deeper than it seats on its own. Once the sprayed coat has dried it is pulled out with tweezers. The material is pliable and takes repeated use until a thick layer of paint builds up on it. On a twin-engine bomber the bays are hidden in the engine nacelles, where masking with tape is especially awkward, so that is exactly where the aid pays off most.
The Armstrong Whitworth Whitley was one of the three twin-engine medium bombers with which the Royal Air Force entered the Second World War. At first it dropped leaflets over Germany, and later it took part in the first raids. The Mk.V version received more powerful engines and a lengthened tail, while the Mk.VII served with Coastal Command in the hunt for submarines.
The package contains the plugs only. The Airfix kit and the paints are not part of it.
