About product

Decals 1:48 Mosquito PR Mk.IV, FR Mk.VI, F-8 and PR Mk.40

The package holds printed decals in 1:48 scale, not a kit. They were released by the Czech brand DK Decals, which specializes in the markings of Second World War aircraft. The sheet brings together four reconnaissance shapes of the Mosquito that are seen far less often than the late versions: the British PR Mk.IV conversion, the Mk.VI in the reconnaissance role (the box designates it as the FR Mk.VI), the American F-8 and the Australian PR Mk.40. The number of schemes on the sheet is not stated here.

The real subject

The Mosquito was ideal for reconnaissance: a wooden structure, two Merlins, no defensive armament and a speed that was enough to get away. The first reconnaissance machines came about by converting the B Mk.IV bomber version into the PR Mk.IV, with cameras in the rear of the bomb bay; British reconnaissance squadrons flew them from 1942. The Mk.VI version had the full nose armament and some machines carried cameras for low-level reconnaissance. F-8 was the American designation of Mosquitoes built at Downsview in Canada and handed over to the US Army Air Forces, which converted them for photographic reconnaissance. The PR Mk.40 came about in Australia by converting the local FB Mk.40 version, kept the full nose shell and flew in the Pacific.

Application and painting tips

Apply over a smooth gloss clear coat, cut the motifs out one at a time and use a wetting agent, so that the artwork settles into the panel lines. British reconnaissance machines tended to be overall blue for high altitude or gray, while the American and the Australian ones had schemes of their own; choose the base accordingly to the machine you pick. Finally seal the whole with a semi-gloss varnish.

Who the set is for

  • modelers interested in photographic reconnaissance of the Second World War
  • builders looking for a scheme for the Mosquito that is not seen everywhere
  • collectors of Australian and American versions of British types

This is a separate decal set. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. The package holds only printed decals in 1:48 scale; you get the base model separately.

The American designation of Mosquitoes built at Downsview in Canada and handed over to the US Army Air Forces, which converted them for photographic reconnaissance.

It is an Australian conversion of the local FB Mk.40 fighter-bomber version, so it kept the full nose shell. It flew in the Pacific.

From a conversion of the B Mk.IV bomber version. The machines received cameras in the bomb bay and lost their bomb load; they served in British hands from 1942.
