About product

Decals 1:48 Mosquito PR Mk.IX and PR Mk.XVI

The package holds printed decals in 1:48 scale, not a kit. They were released by the Czech brand DK Decals, which specializes in the markings of Second World War aircraft. The subject is the two main high-altitude reconnaissance versions of the Mosquito, the PR Mk.IX and the PR Mk.XVI, that is the machines which photographed targets over occupied Europe before the raids and the damage after them. The number of schemes on the sheet is not stated here.

The real subject

Both versions grew out of the same idea: fly so high and so fast that the defenses cannot react. The PR Mk.IX received the more powerful two-stage Merlins of the 72 and 73 series, or the 76 and 77, but its cabin was still without pressurization, so at high altitude the crew was left with an oxygen mask and freezing glazing. It was exactly that which the PR Mk.XVI solved; it grew out of the B Mk.XVI bomber version and did have a pressurized cabin. It was told from the bomber by a flat bomb bay with two ports for the cameras instead of the bulged one. The Mk.XVI became the most numerous reconnaissance version of the Mosquito and more than four hundred were built, while the Mk.IX stayed in the order of tens of machines. British reconnaissance squadrons flew both, and the Mk.XVI reached American service as well.

Application and painting tips

Apply over a smooth gloss clear coat, cut the motifs out one at a time and use a wetting agent. The high-altitude reconnaissance machines carried an overall blue or gray finish with no camouflage, so it pays to spray a very smooth base - on a large glossy area every irregularity shows. Finally seal the whole with a semi-gloss varnish.

Who the set is for

  • modelers interested in photographic reconnaissance of the Second World War
  • builders who want a Mosquito without the usual camouflage
  • collectors of British reconnaissance squadrons

This is a separate decal set. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. The package holds only printed decals in 1:48 scale; you get the base model separately.

The main difference is the pressurized cabin: the Mk.IX did not have one, the Mk.XVI did. On top of that the Mk.XVI grew out of the B Mk.XVI bomber version and had a flat bomb bay with two ports for the cameras.

Usually an overall blue or gray finish with no camouflage. On a smooth area that large every irregularity of the surface shows, so a careful base pays off.

The sheet is aimed at the reconnaissance machines. The finish and the markings of the reconnaissance versions differed from the bomber ones, so they will not fit a bomber.
