About product

Pz.Kpfw. (Somua) 35S 739(f): stowage bin, 1:35 (Lithokraft 350070)

A one-piece 3D printed resin bin for equipment of the kind the Germans fitted additionally to captured French Somua S35 tanks. This is not a kit of a tank but a small accessory for a finished model, and it is precisely this part that turns a French machine into a machine in German service.

The real subject

The Somua S35 was a French cavalry tank with a cast hull and turret, which was among the best armored machines of 1940. After the defeat of France the Wehrmacht captured several hundred of them and took them into service under the designation Panzerkampfwagen 35S 739(f) — the number 739 is the captured-equipment number of the type and the final (f) means French origin, so this is not any kind of French version of the machine. The Germans refitted the machines according to their own practice: a new radio set, a modified turret hatch in place of the French cupola and German stowage fittings on the hull. They were employed for training, for occupation duties, in Finland and in Normandy.

Fitting and painting tips

First wash the mold release agent off the resin parts, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and sand with your airways protected. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue; ordinary cement for plastic will not bond resin. A primer coat is mandatory, otherwise the paint will not hold. The bin is printed as a single piece, so it is simply cut off the supports and seated. It can be painted two ways: in a uniform German shade, or as an accessory oversprayed over the original French camouflage, on which the underlying color shows once the edges have been rubbed back.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of captured equipment in German service
  • Builders of French tanks of 1940 who want the later state of the machine
  • Modelers with experience of resin

Check the exact contents of the package on the box. This is an accessory for a model, not a kit. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
