A finished metal collector's item, assembled and painted, from the Wings of Heroes range, the Century Wings part number 778962, a limited edition of 1000 pieces. The model is unpacked and stood in a display case - no modeling work awaits it. Watch the distinction: the same VA-86 Sidewinders squadron and the same year 1978 were also issued by the manufacturer with the fuselage code AJ400, and that is a DIFFERENT aircraft of the same unit, not a different color scheme. This piece is AJ401 and came out in half the run, that is, in a smaller number of pieces.
The Corsair II is an aircraft that went through an unusual transformation: it grew out of the supersonic carrier fighter F-8 Crusader, but the designers took its speed away and exchanged it for load, range and accuracy. The result is a shorter, stubbier machine whose task was not to intercept but to hit a ground target reliably. The E version, which this piece is, received a more powerful turbofan and a targeting system thanks to which the Corsair was among the most accurate attack aircraft of the US Navy in its day. The fuselage code 401 places the machine among the aircraft of the VA-86 Sidewinders squadron; the letters AJ before it belong to the carrier air wing with which the squadron served in 1978.
On a metal model in 1:72 what decides is the cleanliness of the printing of the fuselage codes and squadron insignia, the seating of the landing gear and the stores and the smoothness of the joint between the wing and the fuselage. The model is intended for display, it is not a toy. The run of 1000 pieces is half that of the sister machine of the same squadron, so of that pair it is the rarer piece.
