About product

DHC-1 Chipmunk WP790 in Royal Air Force colors, 1:72, Aviation 72

A finished metal collector's item, assembled and painted, in 1:72 scale, the manufacturer's part number AV7226001. The model is unpacked and stood in a display case - no modeling work awaits it. The distinction is the serial number WP790: it is one particular surviving machine, which belongs to the collection of the museum at London Colney in Hertfordshire. The manufacturer builds Chipmunks in further forms and serial numbers as well, so check the number on the box before buying.

The real subject

The Chipmunk was a two-seat training aircraft with fixed landing gear, the first design of its own by the Canadian offshoot of the de Havilland company. It replaced the Tiger Moth biplane and became the basic training machine of the Royal Air Force; thousands of pupils passed through it and some machines in British service lasted whole decades. The crew sits in tandem under a long transparent canopy, which is the main difference in appearance from its predecessor. The version for the Royal Air Force is designated T.10. Machine WP790 is today part of the collection of a museum devoted to the legacy of the de Havilland company; the site at London Colney has borne other names in the past, and it is one of the earlier ones that the box gives.

What to look for in a finished model

On a metal model in 1:72 what decides is the cleanliness of the printing of the serial number and the training stripes, the seating of the fixed landing gear and the smoothness of the joint between the wing and the fuselage. The long transparent canopy is the most conspicuous surface on this subject, so look at it first. The model is intended for display, it is not a toy.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of British military aviation equipment
  • anyone interested in training aircraft and in particular surviving machines
  • builders of collections in a uniform 1:72 scale

This is a finished model, not a kit. Check the workmanship, the assembly, the painting and the extent of the package on the box.
