A plastic kit of the American M60A2 Starship tank in 1:72 scale from Italeri, manufacturer's part number 7086. The manufacturer gives link-and-length tracks, decals for four versions and a color instruction with twelve recommended shades, and marks the kit as suitable for wargames. It puts the length of the finished model at 10.1 cm and the skill level at 3.
The M60 was the main battle tank of the US Army through most of the Cold War and followed on from the M47 and M48 Patton types. Chrysler built it, and by 1983 over fifteen thousand had come off the lines, going on to serve in a number of other armies as well. The A2 version, which this kit captures, received in place of the 105 mm M68 gun a short 152 mm weapon that fired conventional shells as well as Shillelagh anti-tank guided missiles, and with it a laser rangefinder. The unusual low turret with its short barrel earned the version the nickname Starship. It was built between 1972 and 1981.
In 1:72 it is cleanliness of shape that counts: fill the joints, sand them back and above all do not load the surface with paint, thin coats look far better here. Glue the tracks into runs on a flat board and fit them while they are still pliable. Break the olive green up with a darker and a lighter tone, because on a small surface a single flat color reads as plastic. Weather the running gear and the lower hull with dust pigment, that is the first place the eye goes on a tank.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
