The type XVIIB was a small coastal submarine built around the Walter drive, the boldest German naval experiment of its day. In place of a diesel with an electric motor it had a single Walter turbine: hydrogen peroxide was broken down on a permanganate catalyst into hot steam, which drove the turbine without access to air. The result was a speed below the surface that no submarine then had: on the electric motor about four and a half knots, on the peroxide turbine the sources give around twenty. The Blohm und Voss yard in Hamburg completed three units between December 1944 and March 1945: U-1405, U-1406 and U-1407. The original order was larger, but the yard could not manage it alongside the type XXI, and none of the boats completed trials or training before the war ended. U-1407 surrendered at Cuxhaven in May 1945 and the Royal Navy then operated her as HMS Meteorite in order to investigate the drive.
The hull is smooth and teardrop-shaped, so the longitudinal seam is the main work: fill it and sand through several grits. Glue the small parts of the tower and the masts on only after spraying. On a dark hull use a slightly lightened shade, as pure black will flatten a small model; a fine emphasis of the plating and a waterline with weed will do more. Prepare a stand for the display case.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
