A plastic kit in 1:144 scale from the Ukrainian manufacturer Mikromir. The real subject is the German Type UB I coastal submarine of World War I. Alongside the plastic sprues the package also holds a photo-etched fret and a decal sheet, so the fine features above the waterline can be built from metal; check the extent on the box.
The Type UB I came about in haste: the program began in mid-August 1914 and the aim was small submarines able to operate from the Flemish coast. The boat was to be around twenty-eight meters long, with a displacement of around a hundred and twenty-five tons and with two bow torpedo tubes of 45 centimeter caliber. The most interesting thing about the whole type is the way it was transported: the hull was built divided into sections, loaded onto railway flatcars and put together only at the destination port, where assembly took roughly two to three weeks. In this way the submarines reached Antwerp and from there by tow to Bruges, and also Austro-Hungarian Pola, where some of them passed to the Austro-Hungarian Navy with a designation of their own.
Glue the hull in one go and fill and sand the long joint; on a smooth rounded hull every unevenness shows. Bend the photo-etched parts on a metal base and glue them with cyanoacrylate glue. When painting, separate the underwater and the above-water part with a clear waterline — on submarines of this period that is the main dividing line of the model.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
