A plastic kit in 1:144 scale from the Ukrainian manufacturer Mikromir, which has long devoted itself to submarines including the very earliest. The real subject is the Spanish submarine Peral, named after her creator Isaac Peral. Thanks to the short real subject the model is small in this scale and the build is more a matter of working with detail.
Peral was launched on September 8, 1888 at the La Carraca arsenal and she is the first submarine driven solely by electric batteries. She carried a single bow torpedo tube and in June 1890 off Cadiz she launched a torpedo from it while submerged — an extraordinary feat at the time, because until then these had been experimental voyages rather than a usable weapon. The Navy was interested in the project, but the political leadership did not accept it and no further craft were built. The boat has survived and since 2013 she has been on display as a museum exhibit.
Fill the joint between the hull halves and sand it smooth; on a short rounded body every ripple stands out. Do not sand away the rivets and seams on a nineteenth century hull — they are exactly what gives the model its character. Choose a dark color, but a lightened one, and separate the underwater part clearly with a waterline. The model is worth putting on a display stand: without one a boat this small and rounded cannot be stood up steadily in a display case.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
