About product

National insignia for the Typhoon Mk.IB 1942 to 1945 - Aviaeology 1:24

A sheet with the national insignia for the Hawker Typhoon Mk.IB in RAF service, limited to the period from May 1942 to January 1945. The insignia are for the upper and lower wing surfaces, for the fuselage and for the vertical tail. Squadron codes, serial numbers and maintenance stencils are not on the sheet - the manufacturer lists the technical stencils for the same type in the same scale under the part number AOD24S03. The limitation by period matters: British markings changed several times during the war, so the sheet does not hold for machines outside the range given.

The real subject

The Typhoon began as an interceptor but made its name as a ground-attack aircraft. It was powered by the piston Napier Sabre in an H configuration with twenty-four cylinders, and the Mk.IB version carried four 20 mm cannon and bombs or rockets under the wing. From 1943 the RAF used it above all against ground targets, lines of communication and airfields in occupied Europe, and after the invasion of Normandy it was among the main weapons of the tactical air force. Crews at first confused the Typhoon with the German Focke-Wulf Fw 190, which is why it was given temporary recognition stripes.

Application tips

Decals are not applied with modeling cement. They go onto dried gloss varnish, are seated with water and a decal fixer and, on broken surfaces, with a decal softener, so that the film follows the rivets and panel lines. Cut the individual markings out close to the artwork. In 1:24 scale a roundel is a large area, so give it plenty of water underneath and press the air out from the center toward the edge.

Who the sheet is for

  • The modeler building a large Typhoon Mk.IB
  • Replacing inaccurately colored insignia from the kit
  • The modeler adding to a sheet of technical stencils

This is an accessory for a model, not a kit. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
