A sheet with the markings of two particular machines: the reconnaissance Spitfire FR Mk.IXs with the serial numbers MJ351 and MK202 of No. 414 Squadron RCAF. According to the manufacturer the Basic Set version contains only the markings belonging to these aircraft; the national insignia, that is the roundels and fin flashes, are not in the package. It is the variant for modelers who spray their national insignia through masks. Anyone who wants the markings complete in one package should reach for the full version ADD24009-1, which is a separate item. The manufacturer also supplies the national insignia for the Spitfire separately in the ADD24C109 range.
No. 414 Squadron RCAF was reclassified as a fighter reconnaissance squadron on June 28, 1943 and together with No. 400 and No. 430 Squadrons made up No. 39 Reconnaissance Wing RCAF, formed in August 1943 and disbanded in August 1945. It flew tactical reconnaissance for the ground forces and, from the end of 1944, photographic sorties over Germany as well. Unlike the purely photographic machines, the reconnaissance Spitfire FR Mk.IX kept its armament and was given cameras on top of it, so the pilot could both photograph and fight. MJ351 and MK202 were among the aircraft No. 414 Squadron used in this role.
A decal is applied with water: it is slid into place and settled with a decal fixer. On riveted and curved surfaces a decal softener is added, after which the film is pliable and must not be touched. A smooth gloss coat belongs under a decal, otherwise the edge of the film will go white; once it is dry, varnish the whole thing over.
This is an accessory for a model, not a kit. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
