An injection-molded plastic kit of the British Aston Martin Ulster racing roadster in 1:32 scale from the German manufacturer Revell. The boxing from the Revell Classics line is put together as a starter set: according to the manufacturer, the parts come with basic shades of water-thinnable acrylic paints, a brush, plastic cement, decals and instructions. Despite the starter equipment this is a small historical car with fine parts, so the build deserves calm and a sharp knife.
In the 1930s the Ulster was the sharpest sporting version Aston Martin offered. It was powered by an inline four-cylinder engine with a displacement of one and a half liters and an overhead-cam valvetrain, and the car was built around low weight rather than power. It took its name from its successes in the Tourist Trophy road race, run on the Ards circuit in Northern Ireland. Only a few dozen were made, so today it is among the most sought-after prewar Aston Martins.
The open body with exposed wheels leaves the frame, the chassis and the outside exhaust in view, so finish and paint them before the body goes on. The wire wheels, the hood straps and the folding windshield are small, so cut them free with a knife instead of snapping them off. British racing green comes out best applied in thin coats over a smooth filler primer. A dark wash in the hood seams and a light dusting on the chassis will give the model some age.
