An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:35 scale from Amusing Hobby capturing the German Ferdinand heavy tank destroyer. The box assigns it to a particular vehicle from the end of the production run, that is to the form the vehicles had when they were first committed to action. Decals are part of the package.
The Ferdinand came about from a chassis that Porsche offered in the competition for a heavy tank and with which it did not succeed. The finished hulls were given a tall armored casemate at the rear with an 8.8 cm PaK 43/2 L/71 gun, one of the most effective antitank weapons of the war. The drive was unusual: combustion engines drove generators and the vehicle was moved off by electric motors. The number built came to just under a hundred, and they first went into action at Kursk in 1943, where more were lost to breakdowns and mines than to gunfire. The surviving vehicles went through a rebuild, after which they were called the Elefant.
Finish the running gear with its torsion bar suspension and the interior of the fighting compartment while the parts are accessible. The large flat surfaces of the casemate call for carefully sanded joints, because every unevenness will show once it is sprayed. The vehicles at Kursk carried a dark yellow base sprayed with green and brown patches; apply the intermediate coats so that the transitions stay gentle. For weathering use washes into the recesses and pigments for dust in the running gear and on the fenders.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
