An injection-molded plastic kit of the German open railway freight car (gondola) in 1:35 scale from Trumpeter. The model is conceived modularly and the box also contains the parts of a section of track, so it will serve as a striking basis for a railway or station diorama. Despite the number of parts the build is fairly straightforward.
During the Second World War open freight cars were among the backbone of German rail transport and served to carry supplies, equipment and soldiers across Europe. The high sides gave the load and the troops basic protection; mounts for machine guns were often fitted to the sides to defend against low-level attacks. It was the railways that played the key role in supplying the fronts and in moving armor over long distances, where tracked vehicles would have worn their running gear out needlessly.
It is a rewarding subject for weathering: bring out the wooden floors and sides with glazes and a dry brush, and give the metal parts and the riveted joints a hint of rust and running grime. A primer, an airbrush and thin cement for plastic are all advisable. Set the enclosed section of track into ballast and use pigments for dust, grease and dirt around the rails. The car will serve superbly as a scene for a loaded tank or vehicle in 1:35 scale and will instantly bring a whole display case to life.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
